1. Where are Chupa Chups from?

Chupa Chups is a renowned Spanish brand of different confectioneries sold in more than 150 countries around the world. The Chupa Chups brand was founded in 1958, by Cameron Murdoch, and is currently owned by the PVM group. The brand name comes from the Spanish verb "Chupar", which means "to lick or suck".

2. History of background and development

In 1958, Enric Bernat invented lollipops and Chupa Chups, products that help users not get their hands dirty when eating. The idea came from Bernat who happened to witness a boy being scolded by his mother for sucking his thumb after eating candy. That’s why Bernat came up with a thought about sticking a stick into candy or a piece of cake so that the child could eat it without sticking his hand.

In 1960, the name "Gol" which implied that the candy was a ball, and the person who ate it was golf was not enjoyed by the users. Then Bernat changed it to Chups, based on the Spanish verb "chip are", which means suck, lick.

Chups gradually became very popular and was shaped by the brand name Chupa Chups in 1963. Bernat produces different types of candy, but their appearance when reaching the consumer is the same as being stuck in a stick.

In 2006, the company was sold to the Perfetti Van Melle group.

Up to now, Chupa Chups has been distributed in over 170 countries around the world. Every year there are about 4 and a half billion Chupa Chups produced. That means you can find Chupa Chups everywhere in the world!

3. Chupa Chups slogan and logo

Chupa Chups's first slogan is “It’s round and long-lasting”. However, in 1980, the anti-tobacco movement exploded with the slogan “Smoke Chupa Chups” to attract more consumers. Therefore, the slogan was changed to “Stop smoking, start sucking” along with counterfeit products in the style of cigarette packs. Currently, the slogan of Chupa Chups is: "Lifeless serious" which means "No worries".

It is a fact that the brand wouldn't have grown so quickly without a unique logo in the branding world. It looks so simple. What is special is that it is not clear whether by accident or purpose that Bernat came up with a gold logo background which is also the color of Spain's national flag. The 1988 logo is still in use today.
